Street Style Fashion

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Decked out in a By Malene Birger embellished top tucked in a pink floral N21 skirt while strutting in T-bar Rupert Sanderson sandals; "take my picture!" I screamed.

This is the age of street style fashion. I couldn't help but to recall Suzy Menkes' strongly opinionated piece, The Circus of Fashion when I first watched this video.

Have we finally arrived in the time and place Andy Warhol once mused,
"In the future everyone will have their fifteen minutes of fame."

Some believed this phenomenon emerged as a defiance of trickle down effect of the fashion industry's tyranny itself, reminiscent of Punk subculture of the 1970s - only further glamourised nowadays. The industry is no longer dictated by runway shows and magazine editorials exclusively, and has made room for the backstage underdogs and amateur groupies to carve their own niche followings, even setting the latest trends. Our generation has produced some familiar faces, street style darlings, or comparatively -as the short documentary mentioned: reality starlets. The photos are inspiring, the clothes are magnificent, and the styling, authentic - almost iconic, I dare say; but most of all, straight up relatable. The whole dialogue happening in the street style culture has proven to be vital and inevitably influential, especially with the advancements of gadgets and information consumption; thanks to the internet. From reknowned editors like Carine Roitfeld, Miroslava Duma, Anna Dello Russo, to young bloggers like Jane Aldridge or Susie Bubble, everyone could get his/her own style exposure, who knows even you could be next in the limelight?

All gaps are eliminated. Between indulging in luxury and compromising a savvy outlook amidst the world's economic state; we are all now involved in this global melting pot where age, gender, culture, status, technology, and lifestyle collide - which could sound nerve-wracking for some, yet for most including myself, a truly fascinating affair.

"The best fashion show is definitely on the street.
Always has been, and always will be."

Bill Cunningham
