Highlights from the Thakoon Fall 2015 Show at Singapore Fashion Week 2015

Monday, May 18, 2015
We were honoured to be present at Thakoon's maiden showing on Day 4 of Singapore Fashion Week 2015

Thakoon has always been a designer who has a basket of ideas up his sleeves. He is a designer ablaze with creativity and that is what makes him such a celebrated CFDA member who has dressed the likes of Michele Obama, Sienna Miller, Anna Kendrick, Marion Cotillard, and Rose Byrne.

For Fall 2015, he presented a high contrast statement that was full of textured materials and rich prints. It was a story that continued from his Pre-Fall 2015 collection that was laden with a delicate bohemian sensibility. Lace was panelled and red floral embroideries were splattered generously on midi dresses – a defining hem length this season. Textured fabrics were clear winners in cropped pajama pants, asymmetric dresses, tailored jackets, and knitted tops. These were displayed in an autumnal colour palette of plum red, burnt orange, rust, and earthly browns to complete his bohemian rhapsody.

Thakoon's show was largely the same as the one he showed in New York back in February but there was something special that he introduced only at Singapore Fashion Week: a fresh addition of bags. Thakoon's maiden runway show here offered us an extended glimpse of his new Fall 2015 collection of bags, a product range that was only launched for Spring 2015 recently. There were new shapes that appeared that were not present in his New York show like a pint-sized top-handle crossbody beauty. The Hudson saddle bags, Downing crossbody bags, and Cornelia totes all received updates too, some adorned with metallic ornaments and textures. It was a well-rounded collection.

Here's a snapshot of what went down last weekend.

Foreign Invasion
A Singapore Fashion Week Edition

Thursday, May 14, 2015
The face of Thai-American designer Thakoon Panichgul is seen on a street lamppost banner along Orchard Road. The caption reads: Singapore Fashion Week welcomes Thakoon. Further down, Victoria Beckham’s face comes into view on a similar banner. These two designers along with Diane von Furstenberg are the headliners of Singapore Fashion Week, previously known as Audi Fashion Festival. To the fashion insider, this phenomenon of foreign fashion houses showing in Singapore’s very own consumer-centric fashion week is a recurring trend.

Today, we put the spotlight on Thakoon and Victoria Beckham. Aside from both designers showing for the first time in Singapore Fashion Week, we find out 5 things to know about these two designers.
1. He is a celebrity favourite! Praised by Anna Wintour in The September Issue, Thakoon has dressed countless celebrities like Emma Stone and Anna Kendrick. And who can forget that sparkling Thakoon outfit that Sienna Miller wore to the 2015 Met Gala?

2. He was a fashion writer! He wrote and edited for Harper’s Bazaar before enrolling at Parsons School of Design in 2001, where his journey in fashion design began.

3. He has the approval of Michelle Obama! Back in 2008, the future First Lady, wore a yet-to-be-released Thakoon Resort 2009 reverse kimono dress to the final night of the Democratic National Convention – a milestone for the designer.

4. He is a celebrated CFDA member! Before being inducted into the CFDA in 2008, Thakoon was one of three recipients of the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund and a nominee for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear; by no means a mean feat.

5. He is highly sought-after! His collaborations run the gamut from Gap, Lancôme to the famed Thakoon for Target capsule collection in 2008. More recently, a collaboration collection with American retailer Kohl’s is slated to launch this Fall.
1. She started out modestly! A collection of sunglasses and denim wear laid the foundation, which has since evolved to include 5 product lines: ready-to-wear, second line Victoria by Victoria Beckham, eyewear, denim, and accessories.

2. The fashion world loves her! A winner of the Designer Brand of the Year award at the British Fashion Awards 2011, she was also the most talked about designer on Twitter during the Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week season.

3. She is a best-selling author! Apart from her autobiography, Learning to Fly, she has also written a fashion book, That Extra Half an Inch in 2005, chronicling her fashion, beauty, and style tips.

4. She is multi-talented! Apart from her label, she has a multitude of other fashion pursuits. She was once a British ambassador for Dolce and Gabbana, walked the runway for Roberto Cavalli, and even guest-edited for French Vogue.

5. She is quite the sentimentalist! She has a tattoo of 5 eight-pointed stars, which symbolises herself and the four man in her life: husband David Beckham and her three sons.

Ryan Storer
Designer Focus

Monday, May 11, 2015
Australian jewellery designer Ryan Storer is one to watch; the “ear piece guy” was what the industry nicknamed him when he first started out.

Having collaborated with cutting-edge designer Dion Lee, you get the sense of where Ryan Storer belongs in a world of different fashion sets. His clique is a cool one and there are few that can sit with him. He is the cool guy with an evident and crystal clear aesthetic of what cool fashion jewellery should be. He would put a single pearl at a precise point on a sleek ear-bar and say that was it. Simple objects, clear structures, and a precise minimalism were all it took.

If jazzing up were needed, he would speckle diamond-shaped crystals onto an ear band to fashion an ear cuff made to resemble icy shards of glass sprouting out from the outer ear. These simple shapes would inevitably become Ryan Storer signatures. Signatures that have since been transformed into collections of rings, necklaces, chokers, wrist cuffs, ear cuffs, and earrings. Signatures that are so defined and yet leaves us wondering what more could he conjure up next.

“Each season I like to reinterpret my signature yet keep the same design thread throughout and love that this can be achieved in so many ways with so many materials,” Ryan Storer described. And so it is. This season, his signature shapes remained largely unchanged. The slight nuances injected into them were tasteful. Each crystal was counted and each curve calculated to caress the contours of your face gently. His aesthetic is ever so concise.

And with Ryan Storer spotted on the likes of Nicole Warne aka Gary Pepper Girl, Rita Ora, Beyonce, Cate Blanchett, Cara Delevingne, and Miranda Kerr, there is no denying that Ryan Storer is on to something here.

An Active Lifestyle
Being fit matters

Thursday, May 7, 2015

“8 Foods Nutritionists Won’t Eat” and “7 Healthy Habits Fit Women Swear By”, a long time ago, these headlines would seem out of place on industry fashion websites but now they are commonplaces and all over the internet too. Fashion and body image have often gone hand in hand. There is a direct correlation. Fashion is what we buy and in turn plays a part in how we look.

Underneath these layers of fashion, our body is either hidden from sight or flaunted in plain sight. To those that care, being fit matters and if you look good while you’re at it, so much the better.

The fashion industry has taken note. Consumers now have a plethora of choices at their disposal. Activewear as a product category on online retailers are now typical with one retailer even stocking a whooping 61 brands in this product category alone, compared to only 12 when it first launched. The activewear market is moving places and VPL, an activewear brand of functional and stylish undergarment-inspired sportswear has gotten the memo.

Launched in 2003 as a utilitarian-chic womenswear brand that aimed to bridge the gap between lingerie and sportswear via ready-to-wear elements, VPL has since evolved into a full-fledged activewear brand with the introduction of technical fabrics like SeaCell – a fabric made of Icelandic seaweed that contains Vitamin E and antioxidants – for Spring 2014.

As designer activewear brands go, VPL is in a league of their own and a pioneer in a sea of ready-to-wear brands trying to incorporate sportswear elements into their collections, even before adidas by Stella McCartney was born.

Their collections are a mix of cool swag and sporty athleticism rolled into one unifying nonpareil of graceful endurance. Wear VPL to the gym and to lunch thereafter. “Not activewear fashion, but fashion that’s active,” as explained by VPL designer Victoria Bartlett, reaffirming that looking good while being fit matters. To some, either/or is optional but to VPL – and us – it’s all or nothing.
